VSW100 - What is Art?

It’s fascinating to read all the viewpoints on creativity,
and it stimulates me to consider/share my own opinions as I attempt to articulate my thoughts :)

What is Art?
Art is often about who calls it art as well as who makes it.

This question ‘what is art’ depends on whether we are looking for a definition or an opinion (the expert)
and
it/art is usually accompanied by someone’s opinion, i.e. someone who claims it to be ‘art’ (the expert/promoter), irrespective of who is doing the creating, (the artist, God/Mother Nature/The Creator of the Universe…) or who is observing it (the witness/viewer).

So whether it is an elephant or a child or a brightly coloured gecko, stepping on a canvas with paint, it is all relative to some of the points above – the observer, the expert and the creator (and who knows if the elephant is conscious or not of what he/she is doing? Comes back to learned behaviour and whether creativity is innate….)

Art to me in practical terms, is the end result of the act of ‘creating’ -  creating as in making/doing something – whether that be fine arts, music, conceptual ideas or performance - imo (in my opinion)Things are developed not created….

I prefer to think that the art of creating involves a 'co-creator' rather than a ‘creator’ per se, as nothing we do as artists is original in a sense, like if you paint, who made the paint,  (who made the pigment?), who made the canvas, who made the creation? It again involves a multitude of factors and as a co-creator I believe it is also a ‘collective’ effort to produce a work of art (who has influenced me to think/create/act/produce in this way? or develop a creation).

Therefore to me, ‘what is art’ involves the ‘co-creator’/artist, the promoter/expert, and the everything else that developed our thinking and feelings along the way, and if we are lucky enough to share our work with anyone else, then the observer/participant is also a part of ‘what is art’

Assignment One!

I'm ecstatic!!!!!
I've just submitted my first assignment for VIS18 - Introduction to Visual Culture
I am so excited that I made it! I was having so much trouble just getting started and I came very close to giving up! I am pleased that I didn't of course! Once I get started I really enjoy the writing, and I get right into it, but it is so painful getting started.
I have to seriously design a better action plan to prevent that terror in the future!

When I work out how, I shall attach a link to it so you can read it....

Paintings in Nejakarto Gallery, Kerang

she's coming along...

Finally got back into the studio today....had a strange morning just painting over and over but getting nowhere, then after a break and some tea, had another go at it after lunch and did some good work with her skintones...think I'm just about done there, need to think about hair, finish the nose (it's a bit crooked now :( but not too bad) and do the eyes and finish the lips and .....whoops I gotta skype call...back soon!

Had a lovely chat with Nat & Subash
(you can see some of Nat's work here: www.nataliesingh.blogspot.com/)

she looks better upside down,.....!

Subash gave me some good tips and feedback about my crooked face... LOL :o) I know I need more practice....not enough hours in the day....wish I could just paint alllllll day!
