Re-enrolled!

Well, I've taken the plunge and re-enrolled in my BA (Arts) course @ Curtin (online through Open Uni)

I was hesitating because I value my relative 'freedom' from 'having' to comply to deadlines with essays and assignments etc. but on the other hand I continue to love to learn and thrive on the inherent need to be busy!

....so, I have enrolled in VIS18 - Introduction to Visual Culture, because I cannot avoid it any longer, as in, I would prefer to just do the practical subjects like, drawing (done it!), printing (done it!) and painting (yet to do) but figure I can't go much further without having at least a 'little' look into the History of the culture of Art.....and much to my surprise, the little look I've had so far has been enjoyable and very interesting.
This unit addresses the following topics.

Topics in VIS 18

Number Topic
1 Ancient Greece
2 Indian Art
3 Chinese and Japanese Art
4 Islamic Art
5 Gothic Art
6 The Renaissance
7 The Reformation and Counter Reformation
8 Neo-classicism
9 Romanticism
10 Realism to Impressionism
11 Expressionism
12 Modernism

Ancient History

After reading a little bit about Ancient Greek History* I have a much better understanding of classical Greek Philosophy....and Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.

SOCRATES

                                                        PLATO
427 BC - 347 BC

                                                            ARISTOTLE

Born: 384 BC in Stagirus, Macedonia, Greece
Died: 322 BC in Chalcis, Euboea, Greece

Read more about Aristotle

Now I am off to read Plato's "Republic"

Plato's Republic also embodies one of the clearest expressions of his theory of knowledge. In The Republic, Plato asks what is knowledge? what is illusion? what is reality? how do we know? what makes a thing, a thing? what can we know? These are epistemological questions – that is, they are questions about knowledge itself. He distinguishes between the reality presented to us by our senses – sight, touch, taste, sound and smell – and the essence or Form of that reality. In other words, reality is always changing – knowledge of reality is individual, it is particular, it is knowledge only to the individual knower, it is not universal.

Angst about Studying

I am having so much angst about re-enrolling that I must take a step back and work out a plan to settle myself into reality again!

1. Breathe [take a few deep breaths to centre yourself]
2. Meditate [www.freemeditation.com]
3. Tap any problems or objections that come up![www.tapping.com]
4. Make a plan or a study schedule that I can manage [simple excel file will do!]

....Ooooh, I feel better already!

My Art Sudy...

Fresh Blog - Fresh Start!

My Art Story....

it started when I was 4yrs old and it promptly stopped after I went to school at around 5yrs old. My Art story started young because I was fortunate enough to have older sisters who introduced me to the joy of expressing myself through making marks on paper...it ended as soon as I was given the idea by my first grade teacher that it wasn't acceptable to draw while she was talking....viewed by her as another form of daydreaming I expect....it wasn't because I lacked interest in what she had to say, but rather because I was bored!
My enthusiastic older sisters had also taught me a lot of other stuff besides drawing, like writing my name, the alphabet, simple arithmetic, and spelling that turned out to be way beyond a level one grade student....but instead of my 'talent' or 'skills' being recognised, I was sternly counselled and consequently labelled as a 'trouble-maker' and someone who needed to be controlled!

Unfortunately, it took me over 3 decades before I dared to 'play' with my pencils again!

Now my motto is: 'Love, Know and Do' which is about all you can aspire for in any modality or craft you choose to practise; Love what you do, Know a little about it or study all you can to learn more and Do it, do it, do it, as much as you can!
So now it is time to sort out my work into some sort of order, categorise it and digitally record it, hence my art study begins!

enjoy yourself,
do what you love and you'll love what you do!
